What is theatre?
Theatre is defined as what "occurs when one or more persons, isolated in time and/or space, present themselves to another or others." - Bernard Beckerman. Theatre springs from man's natural inclination to tell stories. In ancient Greece, the epic play was considered by Aristotle as the consummate art combining all others into a unified whole. In today's world, it is a multimedia art, which combines many forms including speech, gesture, music, dance, and spectacle. Contemporary theatre integrates components of our modern world in the form of electronic media.
What do theatre performers do?
Every time you turn on the TV, go to a movie or a play or musical, you are enjoying the art of Theatre. Theatre students often teach and pass on their work to others. Performers typically work on stage under direction but this can include many areas such as: plays, musicals, operas, Broadway, pantomime, film, and TV.
